Drop
Drop was a room sized installation composed of a twin bed that included a heavily rusted head and foot board that I treated myself, with extremely rigid squared off bed clothes over the mattress and a gray wool military issue blanket, surrounded by a great deal (18 cubic feet) of dried pine needles.
Drop was designed to be an experience in which the audience would both see the bed and needles but also stand upon needles and become aware of the scent and the silencing that the insualation that these needled provided.
I made this work when I was experiencing a lot of sadness and sense of not being able to control the day to day context in which I lived. I leaned into the pine needles as a referent again to Pine and pining as part of my larger body of work, and I also leaned into Joseph Beuys and his narratives about survival and finding peace.
